The St. Mark's Story
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has deep roots in Birmingham’s Black community. Its story began in 1890, when Mr. C.V. Auguste and respected members of the Black community presented the idea of a Black Episcopal Church School to Bishop Wilmer. St. Mark’s School opened in 1892 with 47 students and became one of the few educational opportunities available to Black students in Birmingham and beyond. Though the school closed in 1940, its legacy of faith, education, and community service continued through the life of the church.
In 1939, Father J. Clyde Perry was called as Vicar of St. Mark’s Church and Chaplain of St. Mark’s School. A devoted pastor, he faithfully served the congregation and helped lead the building of the present church on Dennison Avenue, which was consecrated in 1962 without debt. Later, under the leadership of the Rev. Edward J. Wilson, who served from 1978 to 2003, St. Mark’s grew in spiritual life, outreach, diocesan involvement, prison ministry, education, and community service.
Today, under the leadership of the Rev. Quincy Hall and the Rev. Deacon Carolyn Foster, St. Mark’s continues its historic witness as a historic church rooted in faith, worship, education, justice, and radical welcome. Known affectionately as the church at the “foot of the hill,” St. Mark’s welcomes all who seek God, community, and grace.

Fr. Quincy Hall
The Rev. Quincy Hall serves as Priest-in-Charge at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Montevallo. A former organist, Quincy brings a musician’s ear, a pastor’s heart, and a deep love for the beauty and breadth of the Church to his ministry.
His work is shaped by a Franciscan spirit, a love of thoughtful preaching, and a passion for sharing good news in a wounded world. Quincy cares deeply about worship, pastoral presence, justice, mercy, and building communities where people can bring their full selves and be met by grace.
He shares life and ministry with Francis, his miniature schnauzer and unofficial office manager, who offers enthusiastic greetings, careful supervision of parish life, and regular reminders that holy work also needs laughter, companionship, and fresh air.

The Rev. Carolyn Foster
Deacon Carolyn Foster was born, raised, and educated in Birmingham, Alabama. She grew up in the Smithfield neighborhood of west Birmingham, which became known as “Dynamite Hill” during the turbulent 1960s because of the numerous bombings of the homes of civil rights activists in the area. Her memories and experiences from that time shaped and guided her lifelong commitment to social justice, racial justice, and reconciliation.
Deacon Carolyn has served on several state and local boards and currently serves on the staff of Greater Birmingham Ministries as Director of Faith-Based and Community Engagement. She also serves as Tri-Chair for the Alabama Poor People’s Campaign. She was ordained to the diaconate in November 2002 and has served at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She studied Education for Ministry through the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. For more than twenty years, she co-chaired the Commission on Truth, Justice, and Racial Reconciliation in the Diocese of Alabama.
