St. Thomas Huntsville Reports Record Lobsterfest
by GPerna
Lobsterfest XV was Saturday, November 8, 2008, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama. The parish reports net profits exceeding $30,000, which will be divided equally among Habitat for Humanity, First Stop (Huntsville's outreach to the homeless), and next summer's St. Thomas medical mission to rural Honduras.
By all accounts this was St. Thomas' most successful Lobsterfest ever. Over 1800 live Maine lobsters were pre-ordered and then prepared onsite the day of the event. Charlie Erwin, Mark Bannister and the Barbecue Boys smoked 950 pounds of ribs and 450 pounds of Boston butts. Along with a huge bake sale, a silent auction, a craft fair that filled St. Thomas Main Street, there were kids' games and live music outside under the tent. Among the performers were Huntsville's own Microwave Dave and Tony Mason.
"It was our best year ever," reported Tom Atkins, this year's co-chairman.
Begun in 1994 to raise money for a medical mission to Honduras, Lobsterfest has become one of the most anticipated and successful fundraising events in the Tennesse Valley. "People feel good knowing their money gets them not only some great food, but also goes toward helping some of God's neediest children," said Bob Harwell, co-chair and senior warden. "St. Thomas is never better than when we are working to help others"
Lobsterfest XVI will be held in 2009, and will be chaired by Jim Spearman.
